108th SIO National Congress
Italian Society of Otolaryngolgy and Cervico-Facial Surgery

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I am very pleased to announce the 108th Congress of the Italian Society of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery, which I have the privilege of organizing in Rome from 25 to 28 May 2022 at the La Nuvola Convention Center.

This is a milestone in an extraordinary journey which started way back, in October 1892 in Rome, and which has always represented in the best way the function of our Society as a reference point for Italian otolaryngologists.
The primary goal remains to share innovations within our discipline. The National Congress is not just a scientific event, but an opportunity to consolidate relationships of friendship and collaboration between colleagues. For this reason, it is not a simple scientific event but much more.

I sincerely hope that the face-to-face meeting will replace the online mode, which has severely limited the possibilities for exchanging new ideas, guidelines, projects, steering papers and collaborations between institutions. However, we will certainly be ready to face any unforeseen events.

The second and important objective, also open to international guests, is to cover all the classic thematic areas of our discipline with a particular interest in innovations, disputes and unresolved issues. I expect effective collaboration with proposals for the scientific program, which it will be my task to develop, with the help of the Scientific Committee and involving the different professional components of the SIO.

The third objective is to emphasize the value of research in the various fields of otolaryngology. Based on my experience, I believe that research, even basic research, is fundamental in the preparation of both the doctor and the specialist, as it teaches rigorous clinical reasoning. Therefore, I would like to give space to both clinical and basic research and especially invite young people to participate.

In recent years we have witnessed a profound change, driven by the positive impact of translational and precision medicine. There are new scenarios and new therapeutic opportunities that need to be balanced, in order to improve the treatment pathways without burdening the economic problems of our health system. For this reason, the characterization and selection of the patient is important, and this congress also aims to help otolaryngologists in the choice of the correct medical therapies and clinical procedures to guarantee the protection of the patient's health and meet his needs for treatment and rehabilitation.

The congress I intend to organize must be an educational moment for everyone, especially for young people. I know how eager they are to learn; they represent our future, and it is our duty not to let them down and pass on our knowledge to them. Precisely for this purpose, we will organize sessions in which interaction between experts and learners will be stimulated and two-way discussions between experts on controversial topics will be encouraged.
Finally, I would like to give adequate space to high quality video sessions of surgery, commented by the surgeon and an expert, which will replace live surgery and cadaver dissection.

Based on these premises, we are expecting you in the splendid setting of Rome to experience together what will certainly be an important moment of scientific update that will effectively affect the daily professional clinical activity.

I look forward to meeting you all in Rome!
